How About That New Media

Next New
I do think that the next big breakthrough will be in virtual reality, given that it seems to be the new focus of companies that are planning for the future. I imagine that it could be something like a new way to stay connected with your friends without messaging them, such as a a VR room. Having holograms of your friends would not only be very entertaining but it would be a cool way to keep in touch with people who may live far away, while making it more personal than texting, calling or even skyping.

Wiki So Far
In order to contribute to our class wiki, I chose to start adding content on topics that I knew the most about, which in this case happened to be the implementation of new technology on soccer. I have added to the existing subsections under goal-line technology and in-game video review, updating it with important recent events. For goal-line technology, I gave additional reasons why some critics feel that it is unrealistic to implement, citing the approximate cost. As for in-game video review, I pointed out its implementation in top flight European leagues already, and its relative success in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. I plan to contribute more to the class wiki on this topic or another one in the coming weeks.
P2P
File sharing is the practice of distributing/granting access to digital media, which can take many different forms. P2P file sharing is short for peer-to-peer, and allows users to share files on directory servers. Dropbox and Google Drive are two common examples of file sharing services. A torrent is the most popular example of P2P file sharing, it redirects users to a location with different remote hosts for a specific file to be downloaded. Given that piracy grants users with access to TV shows, movies, music for free and without the consent of the creator, law enforcement are quick to close down on the problem. But according to "Should Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access?", the solution is not very simple. People do not agree with cutting off Internet connections of accused pirates, and these sites can even offer paid services that hide your computer's Internet address, making it difficult for people to pinpoint users. If that wasn't enough, pirates also use legitimate file hosting sites such as RapidShare, and post passwords to access the files on outside message boards, which makes it almost impossible for authorities to keep up with all of the uploads.

Privacy
If there is one major negative that came about as a result of new media, it is the utter lack of privacy and security for people who use social media. With one Google search of someone's name, you can easily find their Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin accounts and people can easily go through these accounts to find information about their private life. Young people are not usually thinking about the long-term implications of posting something inappropriate on a social media platform, and it can easily come back to haunt you in the future. This is the case in the article "Attack Ad Marks New Era For Millennials Running For Office" by Jessica Taylor. Jon Ossoff is a 30 year old Democrat running in a special election in Georgia, but his campaign is derailed because unflattering footages from college have been discovered. It is too easy for strangers on the Internet to have access to your information and your embarrassing past with the rise of new media, and people must be aware of long-term implications that any post can have.
Advice
I think that I speak for almost every student when I say that Baruch College is lacking in social media presence. One way that the school could improve itself using these new media platforms could be collaborating with different clubs on campus and highlighting all that each club has to offer, from the things that you can learn to develop yourself professionally, the friends that you can make and the fun that you can be having as a part of an organization here at Baruch. This would encourage current students to find new organizations that they are interested in and be more active on campus, which will improve the school as a whole. An active social media presence like this will also convince prospective students to choose Baruch College after seeing all that it has to offer.

Creativity and New Media
As I said in my last post, I believe that new media is a great source of inspiration for people to utilize and come up with creative new ideas. So I have taken inspiration from two different things that I have encountered on the Internet, a picture of Cristiano Ronaldo whose torso has been photoshopped out and the act of "deep frying" an image, which is to run an image through numerous filters to the point that the picture is grainy and almost unrecognizable from the original. I have combined both of these things and deep fried the picture of Ronaldo, which you can see below.

Creativity
New media gives people a completely different platform to express their opinions to a large audience and gain inspiration from others as well, and this goes a long way in helping to foster creativity. The biggest benefit is definitely being able to share your ideas so many people instantaneously. For example, according to "Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters. But Why?", Youtubers have uploaded mashup videos of Pooh and other Disney characters to Soulja Boy's hit single "Crank That". And companies have turned a blind eye to this, with Nickelodeon seeing these videos of Spongebob as fair use of its copyrighted content. The fact that they tolerate and even welcome these creative, humorous videos shows how they continue to encourage creative uses of their property. And why wouldn't they? It serves as a great, cost-free way to advertise their shows. And the use of new media platforms such as Youtube allows other people to view these videos and be inspired and even come up with new, creative ideas and content as well. One thing is for sure, none of this would've been possible without new media.
